Having sweet water and very special wildlife, Zarivar lake as a national natural heritage is considered as one of the most important lakes in Iran.
As the largest sweet water lake in west of Iran it is 4/5 kilometers long,2 kilometers wide and 5 meters deep and its size is about 900 hectares which is a proper place for water sports.
It is amazing that there is no river flowing and joining this lake and even Zarivar is headwaters of Marivan river.
In winter it freezes so would be a suitable place for patinaje.
Zarivar means like a sea in Kurdish language and there are so many mysterious stories about this lake. It is said that there used to a city in this place whose ruler was a real tyrant. Once upon a time a Darvish passed by the city with his family and was arrested and tortured by the official agents so he requested the ruler to help him but he did not respect him at all and he spelled the city to go under the water.
There are several birds there like white-cheeked tern, ferruginous duck, aythya ferina, stork, grey heron, coots, great spotted cuckoo and graceful prinia.
You can also find different fishes like capoeta trutta, capoeta capoeta, medusafish, grass carp, cyprinus carpio, common carp, hypophthalmichthys molitrix.
The mammals of Zarivar are beaver, fox, wild boar, rabbit and brown bear.
The best way to get to the Zarivar lake is the road from Sanandaj to Marivan which usually takes four hours.
Remember to visit there in spring or summer.
