The dome of Soltaniyeh:
On the way going to the city of Zanjan from Qazvin just about kilometers before Zanjan there is a nice building which has the third biggest dome all around the word.
Soltaniyeh which is the symbol of Ilkhanid architecture dates back to more than nine centuries ago. Having 52 meters high lets you see a great landscape from top of this building. One of the greatest stucco-work blossomed there to present Persian Islamic art in the best way it could.
No one really knows the proper function of this building but the guessing suggests that there used to be a religious place in which people gathered to say prayer and celebrate religious rituals on the other hand many believe that there was built as a tomb or graveyard for Uljaytu the grandson of Genghis.
Uljaytu fell in love with Islam and converted to it later on but the way he wanted his tomb to be was something like the Mongols had used to build as shamanist.
It is very interesting that Mongols destroy everything in Persia but the culture which attacked and arrested them then forced them to turn out to be Persian.
Uljaito or Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh as a Mongol Persian Muslim decided to build his capital there in the name of Soltanyieh to Show his glory to the whole world.
When you enter the building the largest Persian-Islamic calligraphies besides stucco-work and tile works astonished you. Then the small room underground reminds you of Shamanism which many believe that this is the tomb of Uljaytu himself. The stairs lead you to see more glorious items from different parts Persian ideologies from Zoroasterianism to Mithraism and from Christianity to Judaism which make this construction a good symbol of Persian ideologies.
The building has eight sides which helps its large dome’s weight transition to the ground easily and on the other hand reminds you of number eight that is the symbol of heaven in Persian ideology.
Visiting the dome of Soltaniyeh is visiting one of the Acmes of Persian Architecture.
