The mausoleum of Attar in Neyshabur

16

Attar was one of the poets in 12th century whose real name was Faridedin Abuhamid. His father was a perfume seller so he continued his business after he passed away.

He found his way into mysticism and Sufism in his middle age accidently; it is said a Darvish/Sufi was passing by his shop and asked him to give something for God’s sake but Attar did not accept so Darvish/Sufi told him how he want to die? Then Attar responded just like him and suddenly Darvish/Sufi laid down and died. Afterwards Attar left his shop to find something beyond worldly life. He travelled a lot to visit great masters of mysticism all around the world. It is said that he was killed by a Mongolian soldier during the Mongol invasion around 1230 to 1235.

His mausoleum is about 6 kilometers from the city of Neyshabur. This monument dates back to Timurid era but a great restoration occurred in Pahlavi era.
