Siraf is considered as one of the most important ports in Persian Gulf which used to be the largest one in Sassanids and Islamic eras especially in early centuries after the Arab invasion.
It had a lot of commercial transactions with China, India, Arab countries and even east of Africa. It is around 240 kilometers south east of Bushehr port. The main items you should visit in Siraf are rocky cemetery, archaeology museum and Nasouri mansion.
Siraf was founded by Ardeshir Papakan in third century and used to be called Ardeshiraab and later Sirab and Siraf. This port was also a part of Silk road.
In 1966 a group of Iranian and British archeologists started excavating and studying the area to know the history of Siraf.
The graveyard of Siraf shows that there used to different religions living there in the glorious Sassanids era. The time in which various ships came from Africa, Asia and Europe, using Siraf port as a main one in the Middle of the world to connect the continents.
It is said the population of Siraf was more than three hundred thousand in Sassanid era. While reading the history of Siraf you find out that this city has played an important role in trade and even drawn the attention of Jews to settle down there to earn a lot of money as they always know the points of trade everywhere but in 10th century an earthquake changed everything from heaven to hell and the days of glory ended.
Besides rocky graveyards, Nasouri fort, the tomb of Sibawayh; one of the greatest Persian scientists, grand bazaar of Siraf, ancient tomb stones, fire temple are some other monuments drawing your attention.
