Makhunik village in South Khorasan

1

There are so many beautiful villages in Iran but Makhunik in South Khorasan, having mysterious people and weird culture, is quite extraordinary. Makhunik is called the Lilliput of Iran due to the short people living there. In order to visit there, you should take a long journey to the border of Afghanistan.

It is amazing that this village had limited relationships with any other regions until forty years ago.

No one knows for sure where the name of Makhunik comes from but we know that the people of this village came from Afghanistan some centuries ago. They are Sunnis and are very interested in learning Quran and studying Islam so there is a central religion school in Makhunik which attracts religious students from nearby.

It is interesting that people do not leave Makhunik even in drought or poverty because they consider the gone person as an anathema. They do not steal or hunt and always in search of peace. Until fifty years ago they had not used to smoke, drink tea or eat meat because they considered these actions as great sins. They even used to prevent themselves especially their children from watching TV as they considered it as a symbol of Satan.

They raise goat, weave carpet and work in stone mines. They are good farmers and raise garlic, beetroot, turnip, grain and alfalfa and the fruits like pomegranate, apricot and fig.

They did not used to have lunch and just eat breakfast and dinner but nowadays they live like other modern people and eat three meals a day.

The average of the height of people in Makhunik is around 1.40 but recently they have grown much higher. Around a century ago they used to live in fractures of mountains but later on they started building houses so close to one another.

Recently there has been so many changes to Makhunik and modern life has penetrated into many aspects of people’s lives so the result will be the absence of simplicity of rural concept.By the way the Mackhunik village plays a prominent role in tourism of South Khorasan and has attracted many tourists for the past three decades.
