Agate is a type of quartz and is in the category of semi-precious Iranian Stones. Iran is also one of the opal suppliers in the world. Ordinary agate or agate is composed of regular layers of chalcedony, and in the center of it, amethyst crystals can be seen. Agate is widely available in black, gray, white, and yellow to red, green, and light blue colors and is very popular among semi-precious Iranian Stones. One of the oldest agate mines in Iran is the Baig mine in Khorasan Razavi province. “Bamrud” mine in South Khorasan is one of the suppliers of wood agate in Iran.
Using this stone in ornamentations has been popular for centuries and it was also considered as a magical stone for witches in ancient Persia. Its name is after Achates river in Sicily. A Greek philosopher; Theophrastus, discovered this stone there and named it agate.
Making different potteries made of agate was very popular in Byzantium and collecting them was so classy among noble families in renaissance era.
Shaping, curving and engraving agate dates back to 16th century in Germany and even nowadays Idar-Oberstein is considered as one of the best places for engraving worldwide.
In Iran people use agate in various ways for ornamentation and Iranian artisans show its ultimate beauty to the whole world.
